Wet Dry World: I want to like this more because the concept is rad, but something about it is so aesthetically dull, to some mysterious, to me it's just kinda gray and drab.

As a kid I loved the HUUUUGE island and that it had Wiggler! Now I kinda get a kick out of how puny the tiny island is and how deadly traversing its janky slopes are. Tiny Huge Island: I loved this as a kid, I'm lukewarm on it now. Loses a bit for not feeling like it connects back to the top in any logical manner, just take a random teleport I guess! The segment of Rainbow Ride with stars 3, 4 and 5: Give me them seesaws and triangles, give me that red coin maze, actual platforming weeeeīig Boo's Haunt: Neat interpretation of the ghost house concept into 3D, no other stage quite like it, I'd like it more if the mansion wasn't more like "Big Boo's run down warehouse" but I guess ornate design was not something the graphics could pull off too well at the time.Īt least the rather unnerving music fits this shithole vibeĬool Cool Mountain: in a twist on the usual mountain format, here's one you descend, potentially via ice slide cavern interior. Whomp's Fortress: Simple and effective early stage that's like a more obstacle focused battlefield with more training wheels removed (actual pits? oh my!)īonus points for slotting seamlessly into Galaxy 2. Tick Tock Clock: My memories might betray me with this one, but I want to say yes to the winding ascension of obstacles that change difficulty dependant on clock time. You also got SECRET (not all that secret) PLUNDERERS CAVE, I dunno man, this stage just does the theme justice for a launch N64 title. Overlooked because eThat's a cool sense of progression right there. Then on return visits you've got cannons, caps, koopa shells and what not to just go where you please. The wider lower area to get to grips with the mechanics, passing the visual landmark of the chomp leads you to the climb up the mountain as the game's first proper task.

Tall Tall Mountain: Yeah its stars repeat going up the mountain like 3.5 times, but what a mountain right? it's like the linearity of a bowser stage merged with the standard SM64 design leading to a stage with things to discover alongside a direct path of platforming, plus there's good vibes from ascending higher and higher.īob-omb Battlefield: Playing though it in 2020, I have to stop and respect the heck out of this opening stage, it's the perfect playground. I'm gonna tier them, though I haven't revisited Tick Tock and Rainbow Ride on my current run
